Nelson as Steve Freeling, JoBeth Williams as Diane Freeling and Beatrice Straight as Dr. Lesh. Poltergeist was produced for $11,000,000. Since it's release it has grossed over $75,000,000 in ticket sales and $38,000,000 in rental and home sales.

Poltergeist was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Sciences in three categories. It was an Oscar nominee for music (original score) , sound effects editing and visual effects.
