Lionel was a dependable supporting cast member. He has appeared in four films including: the 1983 comedy film Better Late Than Never as the character Bertie Hargreaves, the 1979 adventure movie The Prisoner of Zenda playing General Sapt and the 1968 adventure release Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cast as Grandpa Potts.

His most commercially successful project to date has been the 1967 adventure film Camelot, which brought in $31,000,000 at the box office.
