Josef was born under the official name Sommer, Maximilian Josef on June 26th, 1934. He has been a credited actor since the 1971 film Dirty Harry.

To date, Josef has only starred in the 1989 comedy movie Bloodhounds of Broadway. Josef Sommer has yet to establish a position as a bankable star.

Josef has made such a successful career in supporting roles, that it actually surpasses most leading actor's careers. He has appeared in fifteen films including: the 2008 drama film Stop-Loss as the character Senator Orton Worrell, the 2007 sci-fi movie The Invasion playing Dr. Henryk Belicec and the 2006 drama release The Elephant King cast as Bill Hunt.

His most commercially successful project to date has been the 1998 biography film Patch Adams, which brought in $135,000,000 at the box office.
