Joan was born under the official name Chen, Chong on April 26th, 1961. She has been a credited actor since the 1986 film Tai-Pan.

Joan has made such a successful career in supporting roles, that it actually surpasses most leading actor's careers. She has appeared in fourteen films including: the 2011 action film Xin hai ge ming as the character Empress Longyu, the 2010 comedy movie Ai chu se playing Zoe and the 2008 documentary release Ka Shen's Journey cast as Herself.

Her most commercially successful project to date has been the 1987 biography film The Last Emperor, which brought in $44,000,000 at the box office.

Beyond acting, Joan Chen was the director of the 2000 movie drama Autumn in New York. In 1995 Joan Chen produced her first movie, the action film Wild Side.

Joan is a fan favorite, having been featured on the cover of at least eight magazines, captured in more than eleven pictorials, interviewed in over three publications and featured in six magazine articles.
