Jim was born under the official name Broadbent, James on May 24th, 1949. He has been a credited actor since the 1985 film Brazil.

Jim has made such a successful career in supporting roles, that it actually surpasses most leading actor's careers. He has appeared in twenty-nine films including: the 2013 comedy film Filth as the character Dr. Rossi, the 2012 drama movie Cloud Atlas playing Korean Musician and the 2012 drama release Cloud Atlas cast as Captain Molyneux.

His most commercially successful project to date has been the 2008 action film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which brought in $317,000,000 at the box office.

Jim has garnered moderate media attention, having been interviewed in over two publications and featured in four magazine articles.

As an actor Jim Broadbent has been recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Sciences on one occasion. He won the Oscar for Best Actor In A Supporting Role for his role as John Bayley in the 2001 movie Iris.
