As summer fades into autumn, you can count on a few things. The leaves will begin to change colors and drop off the trees, the nights will become shorter and several new horror movies will be released. Here are six horror films that have recently been released or that will soon be in a theater near you.
Director Tara Subkoff's film tells the story of six preteen girls who have success, a low-stress, decadent lifestyle and, of course, plenty of money. The movie was inspired by actual events. It deals with the effects of cyberbullying and the dependency that people, especially young people, have on social media platforms. The film takes place within a glass mansion that is loaded with millions of dollars in artwork. It's as if they were living in an actual art museum with such notable artists' works as Steven Shearer, Urs Fischer, Dan Colen, Rob Pruitt and Franz West adorning the walls. A fun night with friends becomes a night of insanity when a bully interrupts the girls as they play an online social media game. The film stars Chloe Sevigny, Timothy Hutton, Balthazar Getty and Stella Schnabel.
Young Max, played by Emjay Anthony, decides he hates Christmas after his dysfunctional family fights during the holidays. Unfortunately for him, his hissy fit releases the fury of Krampus, an evil demonic entity who delights in punishing non-believers. Director Michael Dougherty lets all hell break loose as traditional holiday icons turn into monsters and attack the family home. This forces the fractured group to bond together if they ever hope to see another Christmas as a family. The film also stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner and Allison Tolman.
- Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
In the fifth installment of the successful Paranormal Activity franchise, director Gregory Plotkin introduces his audience to a new family. The Fleeges, father Ryan, mother Emily, Ryan's younger brother and their young daughter Leila find a video camera and some 20-year-old tapes in the garage of their newly purchased house. However, this is no ordinary camera. It can see spirits. As Ryan and his brother watch the tapes, they see Kristi and Katie, who have been main characters in the previous four Paranormal Activity films. Naturally, the young daughter is set upon by a really mean ghost, and Ryan is forced to figure out a way to protect Leila. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension stars Chris J. Murray, Brit Shaw, Ivy George and Dan Gill.
- Insidious 3
Horror films tend to do well as sequels, prequels and as sequels to sequels. Insidious is one more horror film that follows the logic that if it worked once, let's do it again and again. This time, the film is a prequel that shows how talented psychic Elise Rainier was convinced to use her special ability to contact the dead in order to help the hapless teenager Quinn Brenner. Director Leigh Whannell sets the creepy atmosphere by having Quinn's father beg the psychic for help after his daughter is attacked by a demon in search of a body to inhabit. Of course, this all happens after the mighty Quinn begins noticing unusual, paranormal events occurring in her house. However, it's not just the girl who will be saved. It's all the humans in her immediate family and beyond. Demons with bad intentions are frequently hard to kill and seem to keep popping up when you'd least expect them. This demonic romp features Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott, Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell.
It's back! The film that director Tobe Hooper so masterfully guided has a new incarnation. This time the film was produced by legendary mastermind Sam Raimi and directed by Gil Kenan. The two took the original, modernized it and gave it a whole new look. In case you're not familiar, this remake of the 1982 film centers around a family who moved to a new home in a new development. After they settle in, strange, supernatural things begin happening. The family is more amused by the ghostly shenanigans at first, but when the poltergeists kidnap their child, they realize this is no laughing matter. Then, they discover that their development was built on a cemetery. Even though the bodies were moved elsewhere, their spirits are still not very happy about their final resting place being unearthed and turned into a suburban sprawl. Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino and Kyle Catlett star in this film that depends more on scary than gory.
- Sinister 2
Ciarán Foy directed this creepy thriller in which a mother and her two sons move into a rural house that holds a dark secret. In this found-footage sequel, the family doesn't find Super 8 film. This time, they find other things like vinyl records, ham radio equipment and 16 mm film. The deputy from the first movie is now a private investigator. His purpose in life is to destroy any homes where the demon Bughuul had set up shop. Of course, this leads to his own family being targeted by the demon. This is one of those films that throws a lot of gore and packs a lot of scary images. Of course, the ending leaves you wondering if Bughuul or the Deputy died, so a third installment is definitely a possibility. Sinister 2 stars James Ransone, Shannyn Sossamon, Robert Daniel Sloan and Dartanian Sloan.
